Very nice north woods resort - there are not many left. Overlooking Star Lake, the restaurant is terrific. The evening sun reflecting off the polished wood floor is delightful. All dinners have been above average. Very nice experience.

First off, beautiful location. That's not in question. I wanted salad bar but their salad bar contained mostly pasta items and had NO cheese, no tomato, no onion, no egg, no olives, and was all iceburg lettuce. What am I supposed to put on the salad? I guess just croutons and pasta. Weird. I didn't want a simple chicken breast on rice for $16.99 so I got a $10 cheeseburger. The patty was thin and pre-made, which I am not accustomed to in the Northwoods. Their artichoke skewers were excellent, however. Will not be returning.

Our family has been going to Hintz's North Star Lodge dining room for nearly 2 decades. Good salad bar, walleye dinner is delicious. Many restaurants have a wait during peak summer dinner time, Hintz's is no exception but the resort/view is a fantastic way to wait while having a drink!

Probably THE WORST dining experience I've ever had. My family (there were 14 of us total) went up to Star Lake for a memorial of a recently departed relative so we went to North Star after for dinner. First, the salad bar. It should be a called a pasta and lettuce bar because while there were salad dressings, there was nothing available for salad toppings like veggies, cheese...nothing! Very random. One of the people in our group went up to get some pasta salad after his lettuce salad and was told by an employee he wasn't able to get more because he had already been up once. Rude. Our entrees, aside from the people (the majority except for kids) who ordered the prime rib and were satisfied, there were three of us who had a horrible experience with our meals. My mother-in-law ordered chicken breast. When she complained about it, the waitress proceeded to tell her, do you know what you ordered, it's chicken breast to which she replied back, of course I know what I ordered! Her plate was taken away and a replacement was never brought back or offered. My father-in-law ordered the bone-in rib eye, I believe. His had so much gristle in it, he sent it back and was told that no one else had complained. His replacement was just as bad. Myself, I ordered the ahi tuna. Yes, ahi tuna in the north woods, but I figured if a restaurant has it on their menu then they should know how to cook it. I ordered it blackened and seared rare. It came totally cooked through. So I kindly explained that to the waitress and she took it back. About 10 minutes later she brought me another that was cooked as ordered, seared. Only issue was once I got to the center, it was still frozen. Pretty gross. I let the waitress know and she took it away. I figured that was the end of that, but 10 minutes later, she brought it back in a leftovers container! After my mother-in-law complained to the waitress and asked to speak to the owner, the waitress very rudely told her, "I am the owner!" and walked away from her. Nothing was deducted or comped from our bill and we were ordering drinks and had ordered three bottles of wine. I've never had such an experience and would never in a million years recommend going there. Ever.

Warm and friendly dining with a lakeside view. Fish fry - light touch - almost tempura style. 4 of us had the fish, none of us placed it lower than 1st in our memories of fish frys. Get here early (45 min wait). Ok, lets discuss pie and cake. wont make a difference what you order... They will all make you coo! Fantastic!

Whenever we are in the Northwoods, Hintz's is always on our list for dining out. The setting on Star Lake is serene. Go before your reservation (reservations accepted except on Fridays, which is fish fry night) and get a cocktail (Manhattans are my pick) to enjoy on the quaint garden patio or rock in the chairs on the porch. The food here is pretty standard supper club fare -- the fish is good as is the prime rib -- though I think it's a bit better than many of the other options in the vicinity. What's really stellar about Hintz's is the pie. Make sure to save room, and you won't be disappointed!
